My Fundraising Odyssey: Insights from Brooklyn to Beyond

Introduction: Discovering the World of Philanthropy
My journey in fundraising began at a major art museum in Brooklyn, where I first encountered the concept of ‘quiet wealth.’ This experience sparked my curiosity about donors’ motivations and backgrounds. As a young professional, I was intrigued by the influential role of donors in shaping the museum’s direction.
The Early Understanding: Fundraising Dynamics
In these initial stages, I viewed fundraising as a simple equation: clarify the mission, identify potential donors, and make a compelling ask. However, this simplistic view was soon challenged as I delved deeper into the complexities of philanthropy.
Transition: Shifting Focus
After eight years, I transitioned to working with nonprofits advocating for marginalized groups. This shift exposed me to the harsher realities of fundraising, where the needs were critical and the struggle for visibility and resources was more pronounced.
Expanding Horizons: Diverse Experiences
Over the next two decades, I broadened my perspective through working with a diverse array of organizations. From a museum finding its first home to a foundation supporting Caribbean scholars, each experience enriched my understanding of the varied challenges faced by different groups.
Learnings: Realizing the Depth of Fundraising
My experiences taught me that successful fundraising requires a deep understanding of societal biases and the unique challenges faced by marginalized and underrepresented groups. This realization shaped my approach, emphasizing empathy and a commitment to visibility for these organizations.
Commitment: A Dedicated Advocate
Over the next two decades, I broadened my perspective through working with a diverse array of organizations. From a museum finding its first home to a foundation supporting Caribbean scholars, each experience enriched my understanding of the varied challenges faced by different groups.
Looking Forward
With more than three decades of experience in New York City’s nonprofit sector, I’ve witnessed the highs and lows of fundraising. This journey has been a privilege, and I remain dedicated to the impactful work that lies ahead.
